Understanding "Income / Hardship" Document Requests

Understanding "Income / Hardship" Document Requests

Last Updated: July 2026

Overview

When your requested documents list includes "Income / Hardship," it does not necessarily mean we are requesting only proof of income.

This document category is used to collect information that helps Crisis JK Solutions verify your current financial situation and determine eligibility for services. Depending on your circumstances, you may only need to submit one or two documents, while others may need to provide additional information.

Your Client Success Representative will review the documents submitted and let you know if anything else is needed.

Documents That May Be Accepted

The following are examples of documents that may satisfy an Income / Hardship request.

Employment Income

  • Recent pay stubs
  • Employer wage statement
  • Employment verification letter
  • Direct deposit history
  • W-2 (if requested)

Government Benefits

  • SSI award letter
  • SSDI award letter
  • Retirement benefits
  • Unemployment benefits
  • TANF benefits
  • SNAP benefits (when applicable)
  • Veterans benefits
  • Child support documentation
  • Pension statements

Self-Employment

  • Profit and Loss Statement
  • Recent invoices
  • Business bank statements
  • 1099 forms
  • Tax returns (if requested)

No Income

If you currently have no income, you may submit one or more of the following:

  • Zero-Income Statement
  • Self-Attestation Letter
  • Written Financial Hardship Statement
  • Letter explaining your current financial circumstances
  • Statement explaining how your basic living expenses are being met

Bank Information

When requested, you may provide:

  • Recent bank statements
  • Account balance statement
  • Deposit history
  • Banking transaction history

Financial Hardship

Examples include:

  • Unexpected job loss
  • Reduction in work hours
  • Medical emergency
  • Disability
  • Domestic violence relocation
  • Natural disaster
  • Death of a household income provider
  • Eviction or housing crisis
  • Utility disconnection
  • Transportation emergency
  • Other unexpected financial emergencies

Supporting documentation may include:

  • Employer separation letter
  • Medical documentation
  • Insurance claim
  • Court documentation
  • Utility disconnect notice
  • Eviction notice
  • Repair estimates
  • Any documentation supporting your hardship

If You Cannot Provide Traditional Income Documents

We understand every client's situation is different.

If you are unemployed, receiving assistance from family or friends, paid in cash, or have no current income, you should still submit the documentation you do have.

Examples include:

  • Zero-Income Statement
  • Self-Attestation
  • Letter explaining your situation
  • Bank statement
  • Benefit letters
  • Any supporting documentation available

Our team will review your submission and let you know if additional information is needed.

Documents That May Not Be Accepted Alone

The following items generally do not verify income or hardship by themselves:

  • Blank bank balance screenshots
  • Empty account statements without explanation
  • Photos with missing information
  • Illegible or blurry documents
  • Expired identification
  • Screenshots that do not identify the account owner
  • Partial documents with missing pages

These documents may still be helpful when combined with other supporting documentation.
